Culture Night 2017 in County Mayo saw a range of events across the county. The theme this year was ‘Switch On’ to culture. The night is where venues and public spaces across the island of Ireland open their doors to host a programme of free late-night entertainment. This is part of an all-island celebration of art, heritage and culture. This is the thirteenth year of Culture Night in Ireland and 2017 is the biggest programme to date.
Books@One hosted a golden event in Louisburgh, County Mayo to celebrate Mayo’s Culture Night 2017.
There was much secrecy in Books@One H.Q. these last few days as sticky tape and ribbon were needed in abundance. Several choice books were wrapped in secret and adorned with various embellishments, clues peppered across the outside paper. In two of the many books encased in brown paper and coloured wrapping were awesome golden tickets. The holder of these tickets were destined to win a prize beyond their wildest imaginings.
Before the beginning of Culture Night, the staff at Books@One deposited the wrapped surprise books around the store, hiding them on shelves and in book stacks. Two of the wrapped books held the lucky golden tickets.
Once the doors opened to mark the beginning of culture night there were rummagers and searchers, seekers and questers, all looking for the same thing. One wrapped book, sequestered amongst the shelves of Books@One, once you locate, you are in with the chance of unveiling the golden ticket. The book of course, once you unwrap it, is yours to keep.
We had a cracker of an evening. Everyone who found a surprise book read a short passage. We had extracts from The Wizard of Oz, historical fiction, classics and children’s books. The gold tickets were found in two great Irish books, Donal Ryan’s All We Shall Know and Joseph O’Connor’s Redemption Falls much to the searcher’s delight.
Culture Night is a great way to explore many different types of art, heritage and culture across the country. The event is free and every county has something to offer. We had a lovely evening at Books@One and hope to be involved next year in the programme.
Well done to all involved in Culture Night 2017. Looking forward to celebrating next year.
