This Summer Experience the World of Poetry through the Lens of Shahai: Photo Haiku

Set aside August 17th and 18th and learn Shahai: Photo Haiku. Acquire the skills, and learn the craft regarding one of the most beautiful yet tiny forms of poetry known as haiku.

Refine your haiku ear listening to poems by Basho, Buson, Shiki and their contemporaries. You’ll learn how to dissect a haiku, study the purpose behind each line, and when to use the silences between the words for greater impact.

Understand how Japanese poets, painters, photographers, and writers experience their haiku; the techniques and exercises they use to heighten awareness using the 6 senses of perception: sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, including consciousness.

We’re looking to form a core group of creatives willing to explore and experience a haiku walk, partake in flash of perception exercises, train their haiku ear, become sensitive to an aesthetic way of seeing through the lens of their camera; plus write from prompts and images, discuss and share our haiku and photographic experiences with others.

To create Shahai you don’t have to be a writer, painter, photographer, poet, or sculptor. All you need is a camera, a memory card, pen & paper, a good pair of walking shoes, and the willingness to open your heart to feel and receive what practicing Shahai offers you in the way of life.

The aim of the Shahai group is to encourage, foster, and create community through works of haiku art. In doing so we hope practitioners will support having their work published in book form through Books@One, including having a photo exhibition and haiku reading (TBA) in a local gallery.
